Polyacrylic Acid (PAA) Polymer: High-Performance Scale Inhibitor & Dispersant
Polyacrylic Acid (PAA) is a non-toxic, water-soluble organophosphorus-free polymer known for its excellent scale inhibition and dispersing properties. As a homopolymer of acrylic acid, it is chemically stable and operates efficiently across various water qualities, particularly in high-alkalinity and high-concentration industrial systems.
At WaterCareChem, we provide high-quality PAA (CAS No. 9003-01-4) designed to disperse microcrystals of calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, and calcium sulfate, ensuring your cooling systems and boilers remain clean and efficient.
Chemical Properties & Mechanism

Polyacrylic acid is innoxious and easily soluble in water. In industrial water treatment, the PAA polymer works through a process of lattice distortion and chelation. It can disperse microcrystals or micro-sand of scale-forming minerals, preventing them from depositing on heat exchange surfaces even in high-concentration environments.
- Broad pH Range: Maintains high scale inhibition performance in alkaline conditions.
- Powerful Dispersion: Effectively keeps mineral solids suspended in the water for easy removal.
- Safety: Non-pungent odor, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly.

Industrial Applications
1. Industrial Water Treatment
PAA is widely used as a scale inhibitor and dispersant in circulating cooling water systems for power plants, iron & steel factories, chemical fertilizer plants, oil refineries, and large-scale air conditioning systems.
2. Papermaking & Textiles
In the paper and textile industries, PAA polymer acts as a superior dispersing agent for coatings, dyes, and mineral fillers, improving the uniformity and quality of the final product.
3. Super-Absorbent Polymers (SAP)
Polyacrylic acid and its derivatives are the core material for highly absorbent plastics. They can absorb up to 1200 times their weight in water, making them essential for high-performance baby diapers and hygiene products.
4. Healthcare & Cosmetics
Neutralized polyacrylic acid gels are used in healthcare for biocompatible matrices, such as skin gels for skincare or skin disease treatment products, allowing for a controlled delivery rate of active substances.
Usage & Dosage Guidelines
Dosage should be adjusted based on water quality and equipment materials. When used as a standalone scale inhibitor and dispersant, a dosage of 1~15 mg/L is typically recommended. For optimal results, it is often blended with other phosphonates or zinc salts.
Technical Tip
For systems with high phosphate levels or extreme heat, we recommend using AA/AMPS or HPMA for superior performance compared to standard PAA.
Technical Selection: PAA vs. AA/AMPS
While Polyacrylic Acid (PAA) is an excellent cost-effective dispersant for general calcium carbonate control, certain high-stress systems require advanced chemistry. Consider upgrading to our AA/AMPS Copolymer if your system faces the following challenges:
| Requirement | Standard PAA | Advanced AA/AMPS |
|---|---|---|
| Phosphate Scale Inhibition | ⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Zinc Salt Stability | Fair | Excellent |
| High Iron (Fe) Resistance | Low | High |
| Best Application | General Cooling Towers | Heavy Duty / High Cycles |
